Glasgow Society of Women Artists, one of the oldest women’s fine art clubs in the United Kingdom, is a community of professional women artists that strives to serve its members and women artists as a whole, through exhibitions, talks and demonstrations, and social events.
Exhibitions form an important part of the yearly programme and are held annually in and around Glasgow. These show the high standard of GSWA members' work in painting, sculpture, stained glass, printmaking, ceramics, textile art, photography and jewellery – outstanding work that is recognised by eight awards. These are adjudicated by external professionals and four are made every year when the main Exhibition is held at the Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie. Two of these have been independently gifted, one is funded by the Society and five have been made possible by legacies from past members. Further information is given in the Awards section.
There is one new artist intake every year in September when applications from those who wish to join as painters and applied artists are considered for election. Lay members and students may join at any time.
Other Society events during the year are an annual dinner, an outing in May and lunchtime talks and practical demonstrations, all providing members with opportunities for relaxed discussion. Please see our events page for more details.
